Life safety gains in the wake of disasters.(Fire Asia)

This year's Fire Asia conference and exhibition took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from February 15 to 17 on the theme of Best Practices in Life Safety. The event provided a fascinating glimpse into multi-agency emergency response the world over, with insightful presentations on the July 7 bombings providing much interest to the hundreds of delegates from a dozen countries.


Commissioner Ken Knight, London Fire Brigade, gave a detailed presentation on the July 7 bombings entitled, When the Inevitable Happened. He described how over 200 firefighters and 40 appliances responded to the four explosions which killed 52 and left 700 injured. "Sadly these events were always a matter of 'when' not 'if' such an event happened, he opined. Interestingly, the same terminology was used by an Israeli defence force delegate before Cmsr Knight's presentation.

Reflecting on the lessons learned Cmr Knight reported that having spoken to other leading European fire chiefs, they said that they would have struggled with more than four simultaneous major incidents. …
