New psychological resilience seminar.(News)

A seminar on the psychological well-being of firefighters is taking place on March 23 in Ely, Cambridgeshire, raising the crucial, often over-looked aspect of firefighter and public safety.

The seminar will be addressing Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)--a system of assessment, intervention and referral to manage stress reactions in personnel exposed to scenes of death, injury and horror. It teaches emotional first-aid to keep personnel on the job, support and encouragement to keep them there, and referral where needed to ensure a rapid return.

The Centre for Trauma Studies in its Audit of Organisational, Operational and Traumatic Stressors in Firefighters and Fire Control Staff (2001), stated in reference to CISM: 'Systems for identifying and assisting individuals affected by exposure to traumatic or extremely stressful events need to be put in place. …
