Vulnerable people living in England's poorest communities stand to benefit most from 11.4 million [pounds sterling] of government funding over the next two years for community fire safety, said a government spokesperson. The fire prevention grants for 2006/07 and 2007/08 were announced by Fire Minister Jim Fitzpatrick to "reinforce the government's commitment to make our communities safer and better places in which to live and work."

FIRE was told: "The new cash will support the Fire and Rescue Service in their overall aim of reducing fire deaths still further and is firmly targeted at those areas where it can make the most difference.

"Statistics show that older people, ethnic minorities groups, people with learning or physical difficulties and those living in poor or temporary housing are most at risk. …
