New fire strategy focuses on youngsters.(News)

Fire Minister Jim Fitzpatrick has set out the government's vision for reducing fire deaths and injury among children and young people and cutting fire-related crime by youngsters.

Strategy for Children and Young People: 2006-2010. The Fire and Rescue Service (published on November 18) is central to the government's goal to reduce the number of accidental fire related deaths in the home by 20 per cent by April 2010 and to achieve a ten per cent reduction in deliberate fires by the same date.

The four-year strategy builds on current good practice across the country including youth diversion, fire safety education and work with young firesetters. It sets the direction and standards for future work by the Fire and Rescue Service and showcases what the Service has to offer for everyone concerned with the safety, education and wellbeing of children and young people and with tackling disadvantage, reducing accidental injury and preventing crime. …
