Multi-scenario multi-tasking: Avon Fire and Rescue Service: Avon Fire and Rescue Service trains its staff to deal with a multitude of scenarios using state-of-the-art technology and a specially developed training centre. From house fires to collapsed buildings firefighters and support staff are taught how to deal with situations without putting themselves at risk.(Disaster City)

AF&RS OPENED THE SOUTH WEST Command Development Centre (SWCDC) at Lansdown, near Bath, as a bespoke training centre for staff of all levels, from probationers to CFOs.

The SWCDC has close links with partners including London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police, to share good practice and software technologies. It also provides multi-agency exercises for emergency planning purposes. For this it works in partnership with agencies including Network Rail Severnside Emergency Planning Forum, Environment Agency and Avon Ambulance.

One of the key features of the centre is its interactive command training facilities. These allow delegates to experience some scenarios in real time, from the safety of a pod within the bunker walls. Training can take several formats, and although there are a number of ready-made scenarios available for delegates to take part in, tailor-made ones can also be created, meaning the scope for training is limitless. …
