Helping to work towards equality and diversity targets.

There is an intractable problem in the UK Fire and Rescue Service regarding the recruitment and retention of members of minority ethnic groups and women firefighters. In 1999 the Home Secretary set targets for the Fire and Rescue Service which required it to ensure that, by 2009:

* 15% of firefighters are women

* 7% of the total Fire and Rescue Service workforce are from minority ethnic groups

The FireWorks research project is jointly funded through the European Social Fund and APU, and is working to deliver findings that the FRS can use to support their delivery of the targets.

The Project aims to outline findings based on research carried out within the FRS that will enable the FRS to address their equality and diversity agenda. …
