September 1980: 25.(Looking Back)

* Thirty-seven people lost their lives when fire swept through two unlicensed drinking clubs in London. The fire was reported to the brigade at 0337 on the morning of August 16, 1980. Some of the victims were trapped inside the club, others died jumping from upstairs windows. The police and fire service are treating the fires as arson.

* Leading Fireman Roy Chapman of Kent Fire Brigade volunteered to rescue a cat which had been stuck in a tree for three days, after a request to Kent Fire Brigade from the RSPCA. As Leading Fireman Chapman reached out to get the animal the branch broke and he plunged 33 feet to the ground. Leading Fireman Chapman died of his injuries after six days in intensive care. …
