* After 35 years in Birmingham City Fire Brigade CFO H W Coleman CBE, is to leave the brigade to take up an appointment as CFO for the Suez Canal Zone.

* The death is reported of Chief Officer H A Smith of Derby Fire Brigade. Mr Smith died at home following a long illness, he was 47. Mr Smith joined London Fire Brigade in 1927. During the war years he was an Assistant Fire Force Commander and led firefighting operations in London, Birmingham and Coventry. He was later appointed Assistant Director of Studies at the NFS College at Saltdean. Mr Smith leaves a widow and one son.

* The Home Office announces that since the opening of recruitment in November 1949, 338,366 men and women have joined the Civil Defence Corps, of this total 20,314 have joined the AFS. …
