'Safer Communities and Safer Firefighters': Humberside hits the right note.(Profile)

Like many fire services Humberside has undergone a period of significant change, with its four divisions restructured to six community protection units. LATEST PERFORMANCE FIGURES from Humberside show a decrease in the total number of fires and in particular the number of accidental dwelling fires--from 708 in 2003 to 610 in 2004. Injuries to people from accidental dwelling fires has also significantly reduced by around 50 per cent from 128 in 2003 to 68 in 2004.

This overlaps with a period of significant change following the establishment of six community protection units. CFO Keith Marshall told FIRE: "Two area commands north and south of the river Humber, which comprise six community protection units. …
