* At a recent fire in a timber yard in Hockley, Birmingham, firefighters found themselves severely short of water.

Eight pumps had to be used to relay water to the fire ground from the nearest water supply, six miles of hose was used for the water relay. The first call was received at 0633, at 0640 pumps were made six.

Three crews and six jets were still cooling down 24 hours after the start of the fire. The damage to the timber yard is estimated at over 100,000 [pounds sterling].

* Hampshire Fire Service recently held their seventh annual competition drills. This year the event took place at Brockhurst Park, near Gosport. Crews taking part represented Hampshire FS, HM Forces, Works Brigades and the AFS. …
