* Mr Michael Heseltine MP, the Environment Secretary has announced a review of manpower cuts by local councils. This reveals that the largest drop in staff is amongst traffic wardens, the second highest drop in manpower is within the Fire Service. The percentage drops are 8.3per cent and 3.2 per cent respectively.

* It is announced that the Chief Officer of London Fire Brigade, Mr Peter Darby CBE QFSM is to be appointed HM Chief Inspector of Fire Services (England and Wales). Mr Darby will take up his new duties with effect from January 1, 1981.

* The Home Office Fire Department has published the report ordered by the Home Secretary following the fire at Woolworths in Manchester in which ten people lost their lives. …
