Cleveland Fire Brigade will have 50 young people completing a Safety Awareness and Fire Education (SAFE) course this week, which is aimed at reducing malicious calls and arson related incidents.

The six weeks course is delivered to groups of 10 young people aged between 13-16 during two hour sessions. The purpose of the programme is to introduce them to a number of different aspects of the fire service, and increase their awareness of anti social behaviour, hoax calls, arson and car crime.

During the course pupils have the opportunity to put on a fire kit and practice drills on the yard, are shown different extinguishers and talk about the consequences of hoax calls and arson. …
