West Midlands Fire Service is reaching its targets for reducing fires in people's homes across the region, a new report has revealed. The report showed there were more than 10,800 fewer fires across the region in 2004/2005, compared with 2003/2004.

The service is well on target, having achieved over and above the majority of its performance indicators set for the year 2004/2005.

In 2003/2004 there were a total of 32,709 fires across the West Midlands. The target for the fire service was to reduce this to 29,931 in 2004/2005, but the actual figures show there were just 21,841 fires last year--a reduction of 10,868.

Accidental fires in houses fell from 2,647 in 2003/2004 to 2,466 in 2004/2005, while the number of arson vehicle fires fell from 4,077 to 3,156 in the same period. …
