Fires down by 20 per cent.(News)

Latest national fire statistics covering the first nine months of 2004 and the year ending September 2004 have been issued by the ODPM.

The UK Fire and Rescue Service attended over 940,000 fires or false alarms (755,000 in England) in the 12-month period up to September 30, 2004-13 per cent less than in the previous year. The total number of fires attended fell by 20 per cent to 484,700. Within this total the number of primary fires (fires involving property, vehicles and/or casualties) fell by 13 per cent to 188,500--the lowest since 1990.

Secondary fires fell by 24 per cent to 286,100 due to a return to more seasonally average weather conditions during 2004. There were 60,900 fires in the home, a fall of five per cent compared with the previous year. …
