IN APRIL 2001, WE REPORTED ON Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's attempts to reduce vehicle arson throughout the Swansea Bay area of Wales.

The Vehicle Arson Reduction Initiative (VARI) was formed during April 2000 and comprises representatives of Mid and West Wales Fire Service, South Wales Police, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Councils and a vehicle recovery agent. Managed by the Fire Service representative, the partnership has been widely acclaimed as a good practice model and continues into its sixth year of operations.

One of the most productive ventures of the partnership in terms of environmental protection and reducing the fear of crime has been the agreement to immediately remove burned vehicles to a safe and secure compound. …
