Firefighter hurt in farm arson attack.(Incident Reports)

A firefighter was injured as more than 15 officers spent eight hours tackling a massive arson attack on a farm near Barnsley recently.

Around 150 tonnes of hay and straw were destroyed in the blaze at Caniston Farm, Staincross.

Fire crews from Royston, Barnsley and Brampton worked through the night to prevent the flames spreading to two nearby farm buildings which contained a variety of livestock.

They were aided by farmer Gordon Senior who used specialist machinery to haul the huge bales of burning straw and hay from alongside the

buildings and tip them down a banking into a nearby field where they could safely burn themselves out.

Long-serving firefighter Gary Thurly-Haddingston, aged 48, from Barnsley's red watch, suffered ankle injuries as he and colleagues fought to keep the outbuildings and the animals safe. …
