* In the lead article of FIRE Mr Harry Klopper, Editor in Chief, notes: 'I have just discovered the exact meaning of the phrase cut of ones nose to spite ones face, it means cutting a few thousand pounds from public expenditure on the Fire Service so that hundreds of millions of pounds can be lost to the national economy in fire damage'.

* The death is reported of Sir Henry Martin Smith, CBE. Sir Henry had for many years been HM Chief Inspector of Fire Services. Sir Henry's tenure of this most senior of Fire Service appointments immediately followed the National Fire Service years. He joined the London AFS in 1938, was Knighted in 1971 and retired in 1972. He was a trustee of the Fire Service Research and Training Trust. …
