Raising standards for industrial firefighters: the Joint Oil and Industry Fire Forum (JOIFF) aims to achieve international recognition of training and competency standards for industrial firefighters and emergency responders by moving towards competency based training.(Industrial Firefighting)

THE JOINT OIL AND INDUSTRY FIRE forum is the organisation for emergency services management in the high-risk industry. It was formed to bring together emergency service providers and practitioners within the oil and industrial process industries.

The Forum is worldwide and one of its main aims is to achieve international recognition of training and competency standards for industrial fire and emergency personnel. In order to achieve this aim, JOIFF has captured the current movement towards competency based training and has created a pathway and structure for this training to become a provider of those standards.

Training for competence requires the development of role maps which are collections of the job functions of an organisation and how they relate to each other. From these occupational standards that encompass each specific job rote are developed. Critical to confirming competence is the development of an effective system of assessment which measures performance against a standard to confirm achievement of that standard and/or to identify further training needs.

A key outcome of this competency based training is that people have the underpinning skills and knowledge required to fill a post prior to taking up the appointment. …
