Local initiatives make a real difference in fight against arson.(News)

Local schemes aimed at tackling arson can make a real difference leading to a reduction in the numbers of deliberate fires, according to a recent report.

Over 30 projects ranging from clearing abandoned vehicles before they can become a target for arsonists to initiatives working with young people to reduce firesetting and anti-social behaviour have been evaluated. All have been funded by the government's Arson Control Forum. The report highlights that where local initiatives have been set up the number of deliberate fires has fallen by about two per cent. This compares to a 27 per cent increase in the numbers of deliberate fires where no action has been taken.
