A ground-breaking translation card designed to help Norfolk firefighters when dealing with the county's Portuguese community has helped in the rescue of six people involved in a minibus crash.

The A4 laminated card, which was launched in April, was designed mainly for building fires. On one side are a series of questions in English, such as: 'Is anyone still in the building?' and, 'Where in the building are they?' and on the other side is the Portuguese translation.

The idea was to allow firefighters to break through any language barriers and quickly gather vital potentially life-saving information at an emergency scene.

There are an estimated 25,000 Portuguese residents in Norfolk with thousands attracted to the region to take up jobs in agriculture and the food industry. …
