In January 2005 the FSC established its new Policy Unit. The team will be responsible for writing a national training strategy for England that will guide the development of training in the F&RS for the next ten years.

Mark Mason, Head of the Policy Unit, explained: "Following the publication of the ODPM paper, 'Towards a National Workforce Development Strategy for England', last year, it became clear that a strategic approach to F&RS training and development was required. Over the next few months we will produce a draft strategy that will address some of the key issues identified.

"This will include ensuring that IPDS is at the heart of F&RS training, the role of the FSC, becoming a Centre of Excellence, quality assurance, leadership, e-learning and how training can be better delivered regionally and locally. …
