FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES FROM across the UK have been attending coastal flood evacuation emergencies with colleagues from the Coastguard, RNLI and Police for many years, using whatever training and equipment the Coastguard had for other rescue tasks. This was not always the best or safest way to operate.

However, they have now identified the need to have the teams properly trained and equipped with a clear remit within the flood emergency plan for the area.

A seven-strong Coastguard team from Morayshire led by Scotland and Northern Ireland East Area Operations Manager Nick Bryant with two sector managers--Ian Fairbairn at Moray and Mike Armitage from Inverness--are conducting an MCA flood evacuation team trial due to be completed by the end of spring. …
