25 years ago: December 1979.(Looking Back)

* The majority of FIRE for December 1979 was devoted the rapid increase in the development of enclosed shopping centres and their fire problems. A survey was conducted amongst uniformed fire prevention officers to gauge their knowledge regarding enclosed shopping centres. The survey highlighted clearly a need for specialist training. Mr A Biddlecombe of a well known fire protection company contributed an article entitled 'Solving Smoke Ventilation Problems'. The articles all noted that the growth of the large out of town shopping centre can only accelerate.

* Fire Master J Anderson of Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade highlights the dangers which arise from the technique of re-wiring old premises with surface-mounted wiring which is carried throughout the house in PVC trunking. …
