* When the bulge of recruits to the Fire Service resulting from the introduction of a 42 hour week has worked through there will be over capacity in fire brigade training schools. This is according to the Association of County Councils. This is one of the findings of a working party set up by local authorities. The working party has rejected calls for a single national training school and has rejected suggestions for a number of large regional training schools. The Association of County Councils says that the cost of recruit training represents only 0.5 per cent of total fire authority budgets.

* At a recent fire in a Sutton Coldfield Nursing Home six elderly bedridden patients lost their lives. …
