Dramatic rise in fire deaths.(News)

Latest national fire statistics released by the ODPM show a sharp rise in the number of fire deaths and fires, although injuries in fires fell. The figures cover the fourth quarter of 2003 to December 31.

The Service attended 1.1 million fires and false fire alarms during 2003--10 per cent more than in the previous year. The total number of fires attended increased by 19 per cent to 619,800. Within this total, the number of primary fires (fires involving property, vehicles and/or casualties) fell by four per cent to 211,700, however there was a 38 per cent increase (to 396,500) in the number of secondary fires. …
