Looking forward with hindsight.(FBU Comment)

After nearly two years of negotiations, interspersed with bursts of official and unofficial action, the fire dispute has finally ended with a negotiated settlement. Stages 2 and 3 are now concluded and about time too. But what do we make of it all? Let's start with the positive.

One of the reasons a negotiated settlement was reached was because fire authority councillors and many chief officers demanded one.

They stood up to intense bullying and extreme pressure from both the Local Government Association and from within Whitehall.
