Fire safety now everyone's business.(News/Comment)

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and the North Staffordshire and Stafford Chambers of Commerce have joined forces to promote a training course aimed at assisting businesses to comply with current fire safety regulations and to prepare them for the forthcoming Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, expected to become law by Spring 2005.

The new Order will see the demise of the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and Fire Certification, and this will place responsibility for fire safety directly on the employer or 'responsible person'. Fire Safety Training Officer Mick Daniels said: "Evidence shows that many businesses have a poor level of awareness of the existing legislation and with all these changes being brought in, it is vital that current and future requirements are communicated widely and effectively. …
