50 years ago: September 1954.(Looking Back)

* SubO John Skinner of London Fire Brigade was among crew members who responded recently to a fire in a Hammersmith warehouse. SubO Skinner stepped from a ladder onto an asbestos roof which gave way and he fell into the fire below. He was quickly rescued and sent to hospital suffering from severe burns. He died soon after arrival. Mr H N Stanford the London Coroner said: "this is another sad end to one of our gallant firemen who risk their lives, we call ill spare such splendid men".

* Kent firemen from Birchington on Sea lowered a ladder down a 30 foot cliff, one member descended the ladder and rescued an 11-year-old girl, her seven-year-old sister and their nine-year-old brother who had become trapped by the incoming tide. …
