Q: What aspect of modernisation do you believe is the most important?

A: There can only be one answer to this question. We are now able to provide a much better service to the public by releasing the resources which allows us to put such an emphasis on community fire safety (CFS) Many of us have been involved in very innovative CFS work for some considerable time now (at least five years) but it has invariably been constrained by a shortage of finance. Most fire authorities endeavoured to find some finance for CFS but in the main it was only sufficient to scratch the surface rather than make the significant difference which was needed so badly.

The emphasis on proactive work should have happened years ago. I can vividly recall reading and subsequently listening to the former CFO of Lincolnshire George Moore who had successfully applied a preventative fire safety strategy in his area. Unfortunately because his brigades was one of the smaller ones his ideas weren't taken seriously by the fire policy strategists at the centre. …
