Cumbria is the second largest county in England and contains almost half of the landmass of the North West Region, yet with a resident population of only 492,000 it is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the country. The resident population increases significantly during the summer period through the influx 0f tourists who are drawn to the natural beauty of the Lake District.

The economic base of Cumbria is heavily dependent upon the tourism industry, however there are also a number of world renowned hi-tech industries spread across the county.

The image of lakes, mountains and natural beauty is somewhat at variance with some areas in the south and west of the county which were, in the past, dependent upon former heavy industries and which are now suffering both economic and social deprivation. Unemployment in parts of those areas, unlike the rest of Cumbria, is above the national average and that reflects itself in the fire service delivery in terms of operational and community safety demands.

Cumbria Fire Service is a department of the Cumbria County Council. It sits within the Directorate of Public Protection and seeks to play its full part in the strategic aim of the authority--'Improving the Safety of Peoples' Lives'.
