Correct and competent maintenance of fire extinguishers in public and residential buildings is an important responsibility for local authority specifiers and works departments. The Code of Practice concerning the inspection and maintenance of fire extinguishers (BS5306 Pt 3) stipulates this work should be carried out by a 'competent person'--defined as one who has passed an examination by an independent body recognised by the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE).

The British Fire Consortium (BFC) is one of only three examination bodies recognised by BAFE. Technicians working for fire equipment firms which are members of the BFC achieve 'competent person' status by successfully completing the BFC's BAFE recognised training courses, which is required as part of their company's BFC membership. …
