Fires deaths on the increase.(News)

Latest national fire statistics covering the third quarter of 2003 and the year ending September 30, 2003 have been issued by the ODPM.

The provisional figure for the number of fire related deaths is 624, 30 more than in the previous 12 month period. This compares with 606 recorded in 2001, 613 recorded in 2000, 623 in 1999 and 656 in 1998, within this category there were 396 deaths from accidental dwelling fires, compared with 384 a year earlier. Injuries resulting from fires fell by seven per cent to 15,800, the lowest figure recorded since the revised fire statistics collection was introduced in 1994.

The UK Fire and Rescue Service attended just over one million fires and false fire alarms during the year ending September 30, 2003--seven per cent more than in the previous year. …
