Secretary of State to impose powers.(News)

A consultation paper has been circulated on possible directions by the Secretary of State to fire authorities on use of their property in the event of industrial action by firefighters.

The government's contingency arrangements to provide emergency fire cover include requirements that appliances and equipment belonging to fire authorities be made available to the Secretary of State. The report says this will significantly reduce the reliance on Green Goddesses and 'ensure that the public is better protected through the use of modern vehicles and equipment'.

The legal basis is supported by the Fire Services Act 2003 which gives the Secretary of State power to give specific or general directions to fire authorities about the use of their property or facilities. …
