Welsh firefighter saves a surfer's life: Welsh Firefighter Kari Knutsen-Rees has been hailed a hero after she helped save the life of a fellow surfer on a very cold and foggy day in January.(Surfing)

Kari, who has worked at Barry Fire Station for eight years, was preparing to go surfing at Llangennith Beach in her hometown of Swansea, when she heard panicked voices near the water's edge: "As my friend Pip and I got closer to the sea we could hear a bit of a commotion but because of the bad weather conditions we couldn't actually see what the problem was straight away."

"However, we soon discovered that another surfer had been pulled unconscious out of the sea by a few of our friends. They were clearly distressed as the man was not breathing and as they were also about to go surfing, had been caught off-guard."

For the next 30 minutes, Kari took control of the situation, calming and supporting the men in their efforts to revive the casualty. …
