There I was looking all 'smug' and confident. Walking to take my place on the 'top table' with the new Chairman and await the arrival of the new Treasurer and Assistant Secretary.

On return to Hertfordshire and home I started to realise the enormity of the task and that I could regret standing for the position.

Bob Bolton, from Lancashire, for the past 25 plus years had moulded and guided the National Angling Section to a very successful and envied position. This had been done with the assistance of Mel Cross and various chairmen, mainly from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

Now it was to be 'under new management' with me as the pivotal role as Secretary.

I have now realised that it is a lot easier to complain and moan than to manage and work out problems.

To have guidance and help from reliable, hardworking and practical people that you can trust, makes the job so much easier.

Also to be 'eased' into a new job has been a 'god send'. I shall explain.

My first event was the Northern Ireland National Coarse Championships. This is held every year during the last week in April. …
