Local focus of IRMP: a Parliamentary seminar last month saw MPs and fire stakeholders come together to discuss the local dimension to Integrated Risk Management Plans. The gathering heard of dramatic reductions in fire deaths, the need for better understanding and use of sprinklers, and crucially the need for partnership at all levels to underpin IRMPs.(Parliamentary Roundup)

Derek Dolding, Kent Fire Authority Chair, outlined Kent's successes over the past years in reducing fire deaths by 48 per cent. He also highlighted the car clear partnership which last year prevented 461 vehicle fires. He continued to recall incidents where children had intervened safely to save lives following fire safety education at their schools: an eight-year-old girl who saved her sisters and babysitter by implementing a fire escape plan; and another who had heeded the drop and roll advice during a kitchen fire, saving her mother. Cllr Dolding identified the central tenets which Kent adhered to in achieving these successes as commitment, teamwork and partnership.
