Who is going to paint the picture of the future?(Comment)

So far each month, I have used this space to provide an insight into the Chief Fire Officers Association's position on topics such as modernisation and Fire Service reform. However, it now seems timely to take a step back and look at how the recent media stories, which have largely concentrated on the pay dispute and strikes, have influenced the general public's perception of who we are and what we do.

The media is a powerful 'window' into today's Fire and Rescue Service. One of the key roles of the recently renamed Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), will be to en sure that our voice is heard over any negative debates. This is essential if we are to re-educate the general public about the future of the Fire Service and demonstrate that this really is a time of positive change. Unfortunately it will not be easy to persuade the media to drop their references to 'striking firefighters' and 'bitter pay disputes' every time a fire related story makes the headlines. …
