* The opening article in FIRE is by Bernard L Child MIFireE is entitled "Cordage and Knots, Some Simple Improvements". Mr Childs opening remarks are: "formally most Fire Brigades recruited their men entirely from the ranks of ex-seamen, both RN and Merchant Marine. It is from these old rope haulers that much of our rope lore has descended".

* Essex County Council is to build fire stations of a standard type designed by the County Architect. Such stations will be for retained personnel. Two have recently been opened and three are in the course of construction.

* Officers and men of Leeds Fire Brigade, who attended a fatal sodium chlorate fire in a Leeds workshop, have been commended by Leeds Fire Authority for their skill and devotion to duty. …
