The Chief Fire Officers' Association--shaping up to meet expectations.(Comment)

The association has, over the past year, been considering how it can meet in full measure, the expectations of it by stakeholders (government; employers; staff; fire industry stakeholders) and indeed meet internal, member expectations. There would be few that would not argue that the Fire and Rescue Service is undergoing a period of unprecedented challenge and change. One critical success factor in addressing that challenge will be the positive and collective leadership of the Chief Fire Officers' Association; and it is a challenge in play now!

It is generally accepted that the association, proud as it is of the 30 years of CACFOA, is not in the required "shape" to meet fully the challenges ahead. It is underpowered and still heavily reliant on the voluntary professional contribution of its members. CACFOA, although almost entirely voluntary was also over ambitious, in a quantative sense, seeking to contribute to the widest possible agenda (just look at CACFOA's last few published business plans). …
