So much has been talked about BSI 5839, especially in relation to the compliance of voice alarm loudspeakers. As a manufacturer involved in the design and manufacture of loudspeakers for the hostile environment, a great part of our activity surrounds the voice alarm loudspeaker sector.

Whilst one can understand the need to be competitive and to keep costs to a minimum, there is a point beyond which no one should go--this is where the proposed, and too often installed, system fails to comply.

If one goes back to the days where the strident fire alarm bell competed with the staff location system, it was accepted that the protected cabling and conduit of the fire alarm would always be the preferred method of alarm over a public address system that had little to offer in terms of continuity in a fire. …
