Witness the mass (and massively costly) slaughter of livestock in 2001 despite good arguments for vaccination as a better as well as more humane route. Or continuation of an illogical Common Agricultural Policy costing half the total Budget.

The reasons for NFU effectiveness are therefore worth study by a fire safety industry that is now looking at ways of punching its own weight more efficiently.

Essentially this lies in powerful local roots, ensuring members have regular contact with MPs in every rural constituency. …
