Latest fire statistics covering the second quarter of 2003 to the end of June have been released by the ODPM showing that fire and rescue services responded to over one million fires and false alarms, three per cent more than in the previous year. The total number of fires increased by six per cent to 564,900. The total number of primary fires fell by three per cent to 217,700, but there was a 13 per cent increase in the number of secondary fires. There were 64,100 domestic fires, a fall of four per cent on the previous year.

The provisional figure for fire related deaths is 587, 18 fewer than the previous year ending June 30. …
