Smoking out key safety messages: smokers face massive health risks--including damaged lungs and blocked arteries. With smoking materials also the biggest killer in domestic fires (causing a third of all accidental fire deaths in homes each year) the time is right to highlight the danger.

The ODPM National Community Fire Safety Centre (NCFSC) is working with the Department of Health to highlight the dangers of smoking and carelessly discarded smoking materials.

The new NCFSC 'Put it out. Right out' fire safety campaign urges smokers to be careful when extinguishing cigarettes--particularly late at night. Spearheading the national advertising that runs throughout March, the 'Inferno' commercial will be screened in some of TV's most popular programmes, including Coronation Street, Midsomer Murders, Footballers' Wives, and Hollyoaks. Between them, these programmes should ensure every audience--from 16 to 24 year olds to the elderly--gets the message.

Joint working between the NCFSC/Central Office of Information (COI Communications) and Greater Manchester County Fire Service will see Coronation Street running a story line during March on the dangers of careless disposal of cigarettes. …
