Retaining the retained.

Who knows why retained firefighters volunteer better than they do themselves? Or what motivates some to move on or move out? Shouldn't those firefighters' views be the starting point for fresh efforts to boost recruitment and retention? Seems a good idea? It's happening now.

Retained firefighters:

* make up more than 30 per cent of the operational fire and rescue workforce;

* staff more than half England and Wales's 1,600 fire stations; and

* operate 60 per cent of pump appliances.

But, nationally, the retained Fire and Rescue Service is 20 per cent under strength. The turnover rate is also far higher than for full-time firefighters. …
