Fire deaths down by almost five per cent.(News)

The latest ODPM figures show that in the year to March 2003 the total number of fire deaths fell by almost five per cent to an estimated 574 from 602 in the previous 12-month period. Of these, 433 deaths occurred in dwelling fires compared with 477 in the previous 12 months. This latest decrease continues the general downward trend in the number of deaths in fires, within the total number of deaths, an estimated 433 occurred in dwelling fires. This is almost a 10 per cent reduction compared with 477 deaths recorded a year earlier.

The number of injuries in fires fell by six per cent to 16,300 from 17,400 in the previous 12 months. Injuries in dwelling fires fell by six per cent to 13,200. …
