* Over several months a debate has been conducted via the pages of FIRE, reference London Fire Brigade's practice of appointing principal officers from outside the Fire Service. In flits issue the lead article under the heading of Common Sense Way argues that application for principal officer rank should be open to all including current members of the fire brigades of the OK. The author argues: '... imagine an Army officer, a civil engineer, a lawyer or a chartered accountant with no medical training applying for the position of Principal Medical Officer of Health and getting it ...'.
