25 YEARS AGO

* East Sussex crews dealt with a train crash at Sweet Hill bridge, just outside Brighton when a stationary train was run into at speed by another which threw coaches up into the bridge. It was dark, freezing cold and luckily the crash site was in a cutting, rather then being more exposed. Valuable extrication work ensued to release the four dead, and a surprisingly light load of injured.

* Cleveland FB announced its new fireboat Cleveland Endeavour. It was protected from burning liquids by its own sprinkler system, it had a two bay hospital unit, oil pollution booms, lighting units, an HP equivalent and it could all be controlled from the wheel house. It cost 444k [pounds sterling], excluding the equipment.

* New stations were illustrated by Hampshire FB, at Southsea and at Fawley. …
