School fire safety questioned.(News)

The House of Lords saw Lord Harrison ask Government "What more can be done to reduce school fires both caused by arson and accidental?" Baroness Andrews replied that both the ODPM and DfES are working closely on this, highlighting the reform of the Building Regulations and the DfES's guide Fire Safety published in 2000, soon to be updated.

Referring to the 100 per cent increase over the past decade and the 96m [pounds sterling] cost to education authorities, Lord Harrison pressed further, calling for statistics to differentiate between arson and accidental fires, increased use of CCTV and non-flammable building materials and supporting prevention initiatives.

Baroness Andrews responded that Government has done much, with stronger regulation, effective guidance and capital investment, most recently 3bn [pounds sterling]. …
