'Soldiers to saviours' volunteers honoured by NATO.(News Extra)

A number of Fire Service personnel--defence and local authority firefighters and officers--have been honoured by NATO for their work in training former soldiers to become firefighters in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The volunteers joined the British Fire Service Training Unit during the period of September 2002 to May 2003. The initiative, project managed by the MOD (see FIRE May and December 2003), was formed to retrain the demobilised soldiers of the former warring factions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Defence Fire Service Chief Officer Bill Holliman said: "The MOD is keen to ensure that the personnel who served in the BFSTU during this period are recognised for their efforts in their sterling contribution to peace. …
