Draft national framework launched for consultation.(News)

As FIRE went to press the ODPM published its Draft Fire and Rescue National Framework for consultation. The framework defines in one document the future role of the Fire and Rescue Service in England and Wales, outlining the objectives Government expects the Service to achieve, what actions are required of fire authorities and what support central Government will provide.

The draft framework--out for consultation until March 2004--is set to become a statutory document once the Fire and Rescue Services Bill becomes law. It is expected to eventually shape the comprehensive performance assessment for the Service which will be undertaken by the Audit Commission

Commenting on the framework Fire Minister Nick Raynsford said: "The need for effective partnership is a key theme of the framework which in effect will be a contract between the Government and the fire and rescue authorities. …
